Well, after much delay I have setup a paypal account for taper madness. When we started this site, we decided that we wanted it to be
1) Free
2) Independent
3) Sponsor-free and for the most part Advertising-free

Now you don't need to be a finance major to realize that something is missing. Well, the collective we of Taper Madness also realized that and the result is that we decided to create the site (if possible) funded by voluntary donations. Lots of people volunteered to assist but we haven't been able to collect until now.

We are hoping to have to ask for no more than $5 / year (and hopefully once you donate once, it will be a long time until we need to ask any individual to kick in again) to be paid for as a 2 year donation - in other words $10 USD. So, if you think the site is worth it, and are in a position to help, please send $10 US by paypal to

paypal@tapermadness.org

If you don't understand paypal or have any questions, ask here, pm me or ask someone else. If you don't have paypal, maybe someone you know does and they can send it on your behalf. Because we are using a personal paypal account we cannot accept direct from debit or VISA payments. In other words, you wil need to place the money in your own paypal account before you can send it to us. I (or someone with more creative talent) will create a

Patrons of Taper Madness

Hall of fame and post it at the main page. I will also have an up to date financial report accessible there as well. Any excess money will stay in the account until needed, either to pay for future expenses or for some other mutually acceptable purpose.

Now for the geek stuff.

The paypal account is a free personal account - currently in my name though if you folks would like someone else to manage it, I'd be just fine with that. The end result is that we can receive up to $500 USD monthly - not likely to be a problem Smile and we can send unlimited (once I finish verifying it which for some screwed up reason I have to finish by mail?). Basically this means that we can receive donations by paypal and pay funds out to people to whom they are owed also by paypal. Within these limits, there are no service charges other than money conversion. The paypal account will accept any currency that paypal handles, but please either pay in USD or pay in a different currency and apply the current exchange rate (you can find it on the net) along with an additional 2.5% for the amount they hit us for changing money. If we ever have need to receive more than $500 USD monthly, we will have to get a business account which has other charges which we can avoid for now.

cheers

Oh yeah. The original intent was to create email accounts for anyone who kicks in. This will only change if the bandwidth demand is too high and we are at risk of running out of file transfer limits.

The email will be forwarding only - so you still need an email account, this is just a way to have a tapermadness.org address to use with your running buddies (or with everyone if you so desire)

If you kick in and want an email address, pm me with what you want for an email address as well as the email address you want it forwarded to. You can also request a team name and in that case also send me the email addresses of all team members that should get the emails sent to the team address. These addresses can be changed if your team changes.

Gee Don, I really like the site and appreciate the hard work it took to set it up, but at $10 for 2 years that comes out to some like 1.3 cents a day.

I would think that for that kind of high-dollar price in addition to an email address, I'd get something really useful. Don't get me wrong an email address is nice, but it's kind of like the Sports Illustrated football phone, I've got plenty of phones, what do I need with another, even if it is in a cool shape like a football?

I want some real benefit here, Don.

Give me a Ryk-blocking feature and I'll send you $10 a day. In fact, I bet if you made that a global feature on these boards, you'd could retire in a year a very rich man.

Look into it.

Thanks for the suggestion Rich!

Currently under consideration is an ebay auction for the right to set up 3 filters for a 1 month period. You would be able to select three words (including extensions using wildcards) and be able to replace them with any three words of your choice.

When testing the word censor earlier, I actually replace ryk with ... well, you get the picture. I don't think ryk was online during the testing 'cause I think I would have gotten some form of response.

Seems like most of you prefer paying with credit card so I will upgrade the account to a premiere? acct. They will ding us for fees of 2.9% and about 35cents per transaction. Seems like the convenience is worth it. I will wait and process any cash payments first.

Thanks if you have already donated and 'in advance' if you are going to

OK- let me be the first person to say.... HELP!

I want to contribute, but not sure how. I clicked on the paypal link in the original post, but it just created an email. Is that right? How do I email you money? I'm such a moron when it comes to computers......
I also don't have my own paypal account- I'm having doubts about my abilities to set one of those up.

Um.... what do I do? Can I just send you a check in the mail? Ya know, snail mail? Let me know.... Or if there's somewhere I can just type in my credit card #, that would work to.

Sorry Nicole, the email address shouldn't have been a link. It is there to tell you the account name to send money to. The account name is an email address - that's how thihngs work at paypal.

so ... I will send you a request for money. The end result is that you will create a paypal account. If you don't want to do that let me know. If needed I will try to get someone in the US to accept checks and paypal the money to the account. I can't really do it from Canada cause I think the service charges for cashing checks would be outrageous (I checked and until I get a US$ acct setup the service charge is $10). Once I get a US $ account setup, I will post so people can use that option.

In the meantime, for anyone else out there, if you don't have paypal but want to kick in with a credit card, pm me or post here and I will send you a request for the money. It just simplifies opening a paypal account. You can always close the account immediatley if you want - but paypal is a pretty handy account to have. You can also remove your credit card info from your account.

Looks like mine went through!

Nicole, I think you have to set up an account on PayPal to be able to send money to someone else (the email address is what they ask for as the recipient). You have to jump through a few hoops to prove you are who you are and your email is you and your CC# or bank account is yours, etc. But the process is fairly self-explanatory--just go to www.paypal.com and click on "Sign Up". I say "I think" because I already had an account (just hadn't used it in awhile). Not sure you can do it without setting up an account first.

Hope that helps!

Oh, it looks like Don just answered your question, too.

Thanks for all the hard work, Don! We all really appreciate it!

Actually, that's not true. Anyone who has donated can have an email address of their choice (subject to availability) as well as a team alias email address that can be forwarded to any email address they want.

In other words, you can't get your email at tapermadness.org but you could have a tapermadness.org address.

Sam would probably find it easiest to remember to mail you at

dork@tapermadness.org and you'll be happy to know its still available Razz

Old thread, but well worth reviving!

I just sent in my $10. Getting to meet -- and run -- with fellow Tapirs was definitely worth AT LEAST $6.50. But if I don't get an additional $3.50 value over the next two years, then I'm gonna think LONG AND HARD before shelling out another $10, I'll tell you what.

ED... how is the old account holding up? We cool for a while, or should some of us slackers 'renew' (even though we aren't really tapers, or tapirs, or.. whatever)?

Don't forget the Amazon link, either! Free money in the ED and Family Vacation Fund/Taper hosting account!!!
